Bears/Lions - Game 8

Time to start thinking about the Draft in April. The Bears find new and remarkable ways to lose, again to the Lions, 16-7.

I shared with a co-worker that the problem that the Bears have this year is noticeable, if hard to describe. Last year, you almost never saw confusion on offense, defense, or special teams. Guys believed in the system, took care of their responsibilities, and mistakes didn't happen - well, that's not exactly right, but certainly not as much as this year.

This year, confusion is King. It's everywhere, in all aspects of the game. This is an indictment of the coaching staff, primarily. Yes, there are new faces, some of whom I hope aren't around next year. Yes, players aren't making plays - the running game is pathetic, and the once-proud defense has entire games where it seems like they've forgotten how to tackle (yet, that's coaching too, isn't it?).

And the news about Urlacher is not good. It might have been Haugh in the Tribune who suggested the Bears invest in Briggs if Brian has a chronic problem. Never thought I'd hear that - or agree with it - even three months ago, but there it is.

We're in for a long second half.

I think this game was a microcosm of the Bears overall troubled 2007 season. The defense played well, but not up to its normal lofty standard; the offense couldn't run the ball, couldn't protect the ball, and couldn't consistently move the ball through the air.

It is downright embarassing for a team as talented and experienced as the Bears to get their collective teeth kicked in by a mediocre bunch like Detroit.

I do not have a positive thing to say about this game. I have attended many Bears games over the years, and by FAR the last 2 home games (vs. Minnesota & Detroit) were the most deflating I have ever been to. Nothing is working as well as it should, and there is some heavy lifting to be done by the coaches and players to right this ship (and also by the front office in the of-season, more on that soon).

Pat,

I know you like him, but Angelo's comments on Benson seemed a bit off from his media appearance yesterday. I can't say I agreed with that analysis.

Mike,

While Benson isn't playing great, he is generally doing what is asked of him in the running game.

Yes, he needs to do a better job catching passes and consistently picking up blitzes (although I think Turner needs to stubbornly stick with him in the passing game, until he either masters it or proves he can't do it at all).

Yes, he needs to continue his recent success in holding onto the ball (a problem through the first 3-4 games this year).

But I don't think he's playing poorly. He's the kind of runner that needs a clear path to the line of scrimmage, and a hole. He isn't gonna make guys miss in the backfield, and he isn't a cutback runner. He's the guy that can make a guy miss in the open field, and that can punish a defender trying to tackle him one on one. I see alot of Larry Johnson in him, where if they get that one hole they do great, if not they are mediocre.

At the end of the day, I put way more blame on the o-line than on Benson for our lack of a running game.
